Part II of our 6-part series on Mental Health and Wellbeing, will highlight the Mind, and Mindfulness in particular.

Mindfulness (as defined by Jon Kabat-Zinn) is “the awareness that arises from paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.” All human beings have the capacity to be mindful, but until recently, it was relegated to the fringes and seen as “alternative.” This all changed due to groundbreaking evidence-based research over the past 40+ years which has shown mindfulness to be a powerful complement, not a replacement for, traditional Western medicine. The National Institute of Health changed from Alternative to Complementary Medicine to reflect the validity of such interventions.

In this one-hour program, we’ll take a look at the journey of mindfulness programs from the hospital to schools, sports, first-responders, and workplaces. We’ll have a chance to try out some mindfulness skills in everyday work and home settings, guided by the instructor, so you can get a direct taste of what it’s all about. And finally, you’ll go home with resources for continued exploration.

Meet the Presenter:

Socolow
Holly Socolow has been offering mindfulness programs in the Central Pennsylvania area since 2005.

She currently teaches community-based mindfulness programs through Penn State Hershey Medical Center. She was the mindfulness instructor for the National Institute of Health Women’s Health Research study for overweight women at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, the results of which were published in the Journal of Obesity in August 2017. The surprising results pointed to a lowered blood glucose level in women who completed an 8-week mindfulness program as compared to an 8-week nutrition education program, adding to the growing body of scientific literature validating the healing powers of mindfulness.

Holly completed her teacher training in MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction), through the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts, the Mindfulness Center at Brown University in Rhode Island, and the Mindfulness Institute at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. She studied under the direction of Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of the 8-week MBSR program, one of the most widely studied and respected mindfulness interventions worldwide.
